Nuit Blanche Paris: When It Happens, and Why It Moved to June

Nuit Blanche in Paris, an all-night art event

Paris · Last updated 17 October 2026 · Written by the Tres Gatos team

If you have landed here in autumn looking for Nuit Blanche, there is one thing to know before anything else: it is not in October any more.

For twenty years it was. The first Saturday of October, reliably, from 2002 onwards. Then Paris voted to move it, and since 2023 the whole thing happens in June. Most of the internet has not caught up, which is why people still turn up in the Marais on an October Saturday night looking for art and finding a normal Saturday night.

Here is the state of it, kept current.

When is Nuit Blanche in Paris?

Nuit Blanche 2026 took place on the night of Saturday 6 June. It is over. The 2027 date has not been announced yet, and when it is, it will be in June rather than October.

The city usually names the artistic director in late winter and confirms the date around the same time, with the full programme following about a month before the night itself.

If you are planning a trip around it, plan for a June weekend and check paris.fr in February or March. Booking flights in October for a date that does not exist yet is how people end up disappointed.

Why is Nuit Blanche in June and not October?

Because Parisians were asked and they chose June.

Anne Hidalgo's administration ran a public consultation on the right time of year, and June won clearly. The reason given was weather: an all-night outdoor art event in early October had been rained on too often, and the 2021 edition in particular suffered for it.

The last autumn edition was 2022. The first June edition was Saturday 3 June 2023. In the June calendar it now sits between the Nuit des Musées in May and the Fête de la Musique on 21 June, which gives Paris three free cultural nights in roughly six weeks.

This is the single most common thing people get wrong about Nuit Blanche, and it is worth saying plainly: any guide that tells you it is the first Saturday in October is describing the event as it was before 2023.

What time does Nuit Blanche start and finish?

It runs from early evening until sunrise, with most venues opening around 7pm and the night formally continuing to about 7am.

Individual venues set their own hours inside that window, and a good number close earlier, around 2am, particularly the indoor ones. The outdoor installations are the ones that genuinely last until light.

The practical consequence: the programme is not a single schedule but several hundred separate ones. If there is a specific installation you want to see, check its own closing time rather than assuming the whole city stays open.

Is Nuit Blanche free?

Yes, entirely, for everyone, with no ticket and no age limit.

That has been true since the first edition in 2002 and it is the point of the thing. A small number of indoor performances in theatres or small museums cap capacity and ask for a free reservation, which opens when the programme does. Nothing in the public space costs anything, and nothing requires booking.

What happened at Nuit Blanche 2026?

The 2026 edition was the 25th, held on Saturday 6 June, with the DJ, artist and party producer Barbara Butch as artistic director and love as the stated theme.

Inclusion ran through the programming, and the work was spread along the Seine and the canals as usual, with a monumental light installation at Place de la Bataille de Stalingrad among the pieces that drew the biggest crowds.

It also reached well beyond the city. Programmes ran across Île-de-France: Poissy in the Yvelines, the Domaine de Chamarande in the Essonne, Le Hangar Y at Meudon, Saint-Denis, Montreuil, Aubervilliers and Saint-Ouen in the Seine-Saint-Denis, the MAC VAL in the Val-de-Marne, the Abbaye de Maubuisson in the Val-d'Oise.

That geographic spread is worth understanding even in retrospect, because it repeats every year and it changes how you should plan. Nuit Blanche is not one place to go to.

How many people go, and how big is it?

The first edition in 2002 drew around half a million people, and more than four thousand artists have taken part since.

The format has been adopted by roughly thirty cities worldwide, which is why "nuit blanche" now turns up as the name of all-night art events from Toronto to Melbourne. Paris is the original, launched under Mayor Bertrand Delanoë with Jean Blaise as its first artistic director.

How do you get around Paris during Nuit Blanche?

The Paris metro does not run through the night, and Nuit Blanche does not change that on its own.

Because the night falls on a Saturday, the metro runs later than usual, with last trains around 2:15am rather than the weekday 1:15am. After that the Noctilien night bus network is what is actually running, and it covers the night properly.

Do not assume all-night metro service. Some events get it, the Fête de la Musique most notably, when several lines stay open at major stations. Nuit Blanche has had extensions in some years, and whether they happen is announced by RATP with the programme, not before. Check ratp.fr close to the date rather than trusting an article written for a previous edition.

The thing locals actually do between 2am and sunrise is take a bike. Vélib' stations work around the clock, the city is empty of traffic, and the distance between the Seine, the canals and the Marais is fifteen minutes of pedalling instead of forty of walking. If you have never ridden in Paris, an empty Paris at four in the morning is an unusually forgiving place to start.

When is the 2027 programme published?

Expect the date and the artistic director in late winter, and the full programme by arrondissement roughly a month before the night.

Until the programme exists, there is nothing to plan beyond the date. The official source is paris.fr, and Sortir à Paris publishes the clearest English breakdown once the programme is out. We will update this page when the 2027 date is confirmed rather than guessing at it now.

Is it worth planning a trip around?

Only if you are already inclined towards contemporary art, and even then, go for the June weekend rather than the single night.

Nuit Blanche is free, citywide and good, but it is also one night, outdoors, shared with a very large number of people, and you will see a fraction of it however well you plan.

What makes the trip work is the surrounding week. June in Paris gives you long evenings, the Nuit des Musées and the Fête de la Musique in the same stretch of calendar, and weather that makes the walking between things pleasant rather than a chore. The night itself is the reason to come; the days are what you will remember. Our Paris events calendar has the rest of the year month by month.

Can you see it by bike?

Partly, and the better use of a bike is the day before.

During the night itself the crowds around each hub make riding slow and locking up awkward, so the pattern that works is riding between hubs and walking inside them.

The more useful thing is the daylight before. Nuit Blanche concentrates along the Seine and the canals, in the Marais, and around the Hôtel de Ville, which is almost exactly the geography of a good afternoon on a bike. Ride it once with someone who knows the streets and you will spend the night walking between pieces instead of standing still staring at a map on a dying phone.

Our Paris tours run in daylight, and in June they run most days. If your Nuit Blanche Saturday starts at seven in the evening, the afternoon before it is free.
