Barcelona Running Races & Cycling Events 2026-27: Dates and Closures | Tres Gatos

Runners on a Barcelona street during a city race

Barcelona · Updated 15 September 2026

Dates marked confirmed come from the organisers or the city; the rest are the usual slot and get fixed a few months ahead. Routes and start times change year to year — always check the official page before you plan around one. Written in Barcelona by the Tres Gatos team.

Barcelona runs more than fifty road races a year, and rides a good many more. For most visitors that matters in one of two ways: either you want to enter one, or you want to know why Aragó is shut on a Sunday morning and your taxi isn't moving.

This covers both. Egor rides through most of these weekends, so the notes on closures are the practical kind — which streets go, for how long, and whether the morning is still worth having.

What running races are coming up in Barcelona?

The next one is the Cursa de la Mercè on Sunday 20 September 2026 — 10 km, 17,200 runners, starting at 8:30. After that the autumn fills with 10Ks, and the year closes with the Cursa dels Nassos on 31 December. The big two, the half marathon and the marathon, come in February and March.

Here is the year as it actually runs:

May 2027Cursa El Corte Inglés10 kmusual slot

Two of these are genuinely big by European standards. The Mitja drew more than 30,000 runners in 2026 — a participation record — and it's where Jacob Kiplimo set the half marathon world record in 2025, at 56:42. The marathon had 27,000 finishers in 2026, its best since 2016, and runs through 25 of the city's 73 neighbourhoods.

Cursa de la Mercè 2026: what you need to know

Sunday 20 September, 8:30, starting on Carrer d'Aragó and finishing in Plaça de Catalunya. Capacity is 17,200 runners. The route was redrawn last year to make it faster and more central, and it now runs right through the middle of the Eixample rather than out to the seafront and back.

It's the city's own race, named for the same patron saint as the festival, and it has the atmosphere to match — closer to a street party with numbers on than a time trial. In 2026 it falls on the Sunday before the Festes de la Mercè open on the 23rd, so a trip built around both covers a full week of the city at its loudest.

What it closes: Carrer d'Aragó and the surrounding Eixample grid from early morning until roughly midday, plus Plaça de Catalunya at the finish. If you have an early flight or a train from Sants that Sunday, leave extra time — and don't count on a taxi crossing the Eixample before noon.

Cursa dels Nassos: the one that ends the year

31 December, 18:00, 10 km — run in the dark, on the last evening of the year. That start time is the whole character of it: you finish, you go home, you change, and you're out for New Year's Eve. It's one of the few races anywhere that people run in fancy dress without it being a gimmick.

If you're in Barcelona over New Year, it's a better story than most things you could do that afternoon.

Cyclists on a road outside Barcelona
Organised rides happen in the hills of the province, not inside the city.

What about cycling events — is there anything for visitors?

Almost everything organised around Barcelona is a marxa cicloturista — a long non-competitive road ride, usually 100 to 150 km, in the hills outside the city rather than in it. They're excellent, and they're not really a tourist activity: you need your own bike, decent fitness, and to register months ahead.

The main ones in the province:

MayPorts del Maresme147 kmArenys de Munt

MayOrbea Cadí Challenge120/118 kmGuardiola de Berguedà

Note what isn't on that list: a mass participation ride inside Barcelona itself. The city has no equivalent of a London RideLondon or a Paris car-free ride day. Cycling in Barcelona is an everyday thing rather than an event, which is a pity for spectacle and rather good for the rest of the year.

Which race days actually close streets in Barcelona?

Three do it on a scale that changes your day: the marathon in March, the half in February, and the Cursa de la Mercè in September. The rest are local, contained, and over by mid-morning.

What to expect from each:

  • Zurich Marató (March). The biggest disruption of the year. The route crosses 25 neighbourhoods and closes major arteries from early morning to early afternoon. Avinguda Diagonal, Passeig de Gràcia, the Gran Via and the Montjuïc approach are all affected at some point.
  • Mitja Marató (February). Similar shape, shorter duration — the course is half the length and most runners are done within two and a half hours.
  • Cursa de la Mercè (September). Concentrated in the central Eixample, done by midday.
  • Cursa dels Nassos (31 December). Evening closures rather than morning, and the city is already half shut for New Year's Eve.

The common pattern is that these are all Sunday-morning events, and they all release the streets by early afternoon. It's the same rhythm as the festivals: the disruption has a shape, and knowing the shape is most of the battle.

Can you cycle in Barcelona on a race day?

Yes, and it's usually the best way to move — but never try to cross a live race route. A closed course has marshals, barriers and a continuous stream of runners; there's no gap to time. Go around, which is easier than it sounds because the courses are linear and the parallel street one block over is normally open.

Two practical notes from riding these mornings. The bike lanes on the closed arteries are closed with them, so plan the parallel route rather than assuming your usual lane works. And the hour after a race finishes is worse than the race itself for moving around — barriers come down slowly, and 17,000 people are all walking to the metro at once.

We run tours on race Sundays and set the route that morning, once the closures are physically up. It's the same job as during festival weeks: the map on paper and the map on the street are different documents.

On a race Sunday, riding with us means someone has already worked out which streets are open.

Can visitors enter these races?

Yes — all of the city races are open to anyone, with online registration and no club membership needed. The practical constraints are capacity and timing rather than eligibility. The Cursa de la Mercè caps at 17,200 and sells out. The marathon and half open registration roughly a year ahead and fill steadily.

A few things worth knowing before you enter one in Spain: you'll usually need to be 18 for the half or the marathon, registration is online and closes well before race day, and some events ask for a medical certificate. Bib collection is almost always in person at an expo a day or two before — factor that into your trip, because there's rarely a race-morning option.

When is the best time of year to run in Barcelona?

October through March. Summer is too hot and humid for anything beyond an early-morning seafront run, which is exactly why the calendar is empty in July and August and crowded in autumn and late winter.

February and March are the peak — the two big races sit there for a reason, with cool mornings, low humidity and reliable weather. If you're planning a trip around running rather than fitting a run into a trip, that's the window.

Barcelona takes its running seriously and its calendar is genuinely good — more than fifty races a year in a city you can cross in an hour. If you're visiting and want to run one, pick the Mercè for atmosphere or the Mitja for a fast time. And if you just want to know why your street is shut, it's probably a Sunday in March.

Either way, the mornings after are the best time to see the city on two wheels. That part we can help with.

FAQ: races and rides in Barcelona

When is the Barcelona Marathon 2027?

When is the Barcelona Half Marathon 2027?

Sunday 14 February 2027. It's the faster of the city's two big races and drew over 30,000 runners in 2026. Jacob Kiplimo set the half marathon world record here in 2025, at 56:42.

When is the Cursa de la Mercè 2026?

Sunday 20 September 2026, starting at 8:30 from Carrer d'Aragó and finishing in Plaça de Catalunya. It's a 10 km race with a capacity of 17,200 runners, held alongside the Festes de la Mercè.

Can tourists take part in Barcelona races?

Yes. All the city races are open to anyone with online registration and no club membership required. The limits are capacity and deadlines rather than eligibility — the Mercè sells out, and bib collection is usually in person at an expo a day or two before the race.

Which Barcelona race closes the most roads?

The Zurich Marató in March. Its route crosses 25 neighbourhoods and closes major arteries including the Diagonal, Passeig de Gràcia and Gran Via from early morning until early afternoon. The February half marathon is similar but shorter.

Are there cycling events in Barcelona city?

Not really. Organised rides around Barcelona are marxes cicloturistes — long non-competitive road rides of 100 to 150 km in the hills outside the city, mostly between March and May. They need your own bike, real fitness and advance registration. There's no mass participation ride inside the city itself.

Can you cycle in Barcelona during a race?

Yes, away from the course. Never attempt to cross a live race route — go around by a parallel street one block over. Note that bike lanes on the closed roads are closed too, and the hour after the finish is the most congested part of the day.

What's the best time of year to run in Barcelona?

October to March. Summer is too hot and humid for anything beyond an early seafront run, which is why the race calendar is empty in July and August. February and March are the peak, with cool mornings and reliable weather.
